BRIEF HISTORY

SIAT was founded in 1967 as a joint venture between a top Italian industrial group through their insurance company SAI and a number of leading Italian shipowners operating in different areas of the shipping industry.
In 1969 the company started the Foreign Agencies operation by writing marine insurance via various agents located in other European countries, namely Belgium, France, Germany, Norway and the Netherlands.

The intention was to create a specialized marine underwriter who could assist the marine industry in the different areas and aspects of their activity. The company quickly developed its leading role in the Italian market and gradually expanded its presence abroad, with special focus on the Mediterranean region.

A meaningful presence within the Italian shipping world was maintained throughout the years with some leading shipowners also being shareholders of the company and members of the board of directors. This emphasized the persistent close relationship of SIAT to the shipping community, which represented the core of its business.

In order to offer a more complete service to its clients and brokers, SIAT decided to start writing non-marine business and was licensed in 1987 to operate in all the main areas of activity.
